our 5-step
A fence project has several moving parts: layout, material, gates, property lines, local rules, utility marking, installation, and final review. Here’s what to expect when Cedar Rustic Fence Co. installs your fence.
Free Estimate & Fence Layout
Everything starts with a free in-home estimate. Call 800-262-0388 or submit a request using our contact form.
Once you approve the fence style and project details, you can sign the contract and place a deposit. From there, your installation will move into scheduling and preparation.
Most fence installations are completed in one day, but larger layouts, difficult access, weather, or site conditions can add time.

- Can you provide an online fence estimate?
We can give general guidance online, but the best way to price a project directly is through an in-person estimate. Slopes, soil, access, tree roots, old fence removal, gates, and hidden obstacles can change the final cost.
Permits, HOA Rules & Property Lines
Most townships today require a permit prior to the installation of a new fence. Usually, a copy of your plat of survey and a contract for the fence is all that is needed for a permit. Before installation, check whether your project needs a permit, HOA approval, or a plat of survey.
We also recommend that you check with your homeowner’s association to see if there are any restrictions prior to building your fence.
Chicago note: Chicago says a building permit is not required for certain fences no more than 5 feet above ground if the fence follows the Chicago Zoning Ordinance, but taller fences and special conditions may need permit review. Always confirm with the local building department before work begins.

- What if my HOA has specific fence restrictions?
We have extensive experience working within HOA guidelines. Let us know your association's rules, and we'll design a fence that meets their requirements while enhancing your property.
Fence Preparation & Manufacturing
Once your project details are approved and your deposit is received, Cedar Rustic prepares your fence through our Joliet facility.
Your installation date is scheduled based on material readiness, weather, crew availability, and site conditions. This preparation helps reduce delays and ensures the crew has a clear plan before installation day.

- How does Cedar Rustic control fence quality?
At Cedar Rustic, we prepare fence materials through our Joliet facility and work with cedar, vinyl, aluminum, and chain link options built for residential use. Your estimate will cover the material, style, height, gate layout, and warranty details for your specific fence.
Utility Marking & Installation Day
Two to seven days before the installation of your fence, Cedar Rustic will notify J.U.L.I.E (Joint Utility Locating Information for Excavators). If you live in Indiana, we ask you to call Diggers (1.800.382.5544). J.U.L.I.E. and Diggers will instruct local utility companies to locate their underground facilities in your yard.
Please leave all flags, paint, and markings in place until your fence is complete. JULIE member utility companies mark their own lines, and JULIE does not locate private lines such as sprinkler systems, private lighting, pool lines, or other customer-owned underground lines.
Cedar Rustic Fence Co. will take care of scheduling all required inspections.
On installation day, your crew chief will review the fence placement with you before starting work. Please provide a copy of your plat of survey so the crew can confirm the planned layout. You don’t have to be home for the full installation, but we need a valid phone number in case the crew has questions.

- How much space does the crew need to install the fence?
The crew usually needs about 2 feet of working space inside the fence line. Please clear movable items from the area before installation. If there are plants, tree roots, sprinklers, lighting, or other items near the fence line, point them out during the estimate or before work begins.
Final Walkthrough
When our authorized installers have completed installing your fence, your crew chief will review the job with you making sure you are satisfied with our work.
Final payment or financing paperwork is due upon completion of the fence.
Warranty: All of our fences come with extensive warranties: a three-year warranty on the workmanship and installation of the fence. Our gates are warrantied for one year. Our aluminum and vinyl products have a limited lifetime warranty on the material. If you have any problems with the fence after installation, don’t hesitate to call us and we’ll work hard to resolve your issue.

Before Fence Installation:
5 Things to Check

- 01Property Lines
Before the project progresses, have your plat of survey ready. This helps confirm the planned fence layout and may be required by your municipality or HOA.
- 02Local Fence Rules
Fence height, material, and placement rules vary by city, village, township, and HOA. Chicago has separate rules for certain fence heights and permit situations, so always confirm local requirements before work begins.
- 03HOA Approval
If your neighborhood has an HOA, check fence height, color, material, and placement restrictions before approving the project.
- 04Utility Marking
Illinois digging projects require JULIE notification before excavation. JULIE says notification is required at least 3 days before digging, and the service is free.
- 05Gates, Access & Yard Obstacles
Plan gate placement around daily use, including lawn equipment, pets, trash bins, and pool access. Also, point out sprinklers, lighting, drain tiles, tree roots, or private underground lines near the fence path.
Other FAQ about Fence Installation
- What do I need to know before building a fence?
Before building a fence, check your property lines, HOA rules, municipal permit requirements, utility markings, and gate placement. A plat of survey is often needed for permits or HOA approval.
- What is the cheapest fence material?
Upfront, a wood fence or chain link is often the most affordable choice. Long-term, low-maintenance materials like vinyl and aluminum can offer better value. Our sales representatives will walk you through the total cost of ownership.
- How much does it cost to put a fence around your property?
Fence installation cost depends on material, height, total footage, gates, terrain, access, old fence removal, and local requirements. A simple chain link layout typically has a different price than a tall privacy fence, a decorative aluminum fence, or a custom cedar layout with multiple gates. Sloped yards, tree roots, tight access, rocky soil, and demolition can also impact the final quote.
- Do you install commercial security fences?
Yes. Cedar Rustic installs commercial fencing for businesses, warehouses, storage areas, daycare centers, and commercial properties. Options include security fences, commercial gates, dumpster enclosures, and interior fences or cages for equipment, inventory, animals, and restricted areas.
- Can you install a fence yourself?
DIY is possible, but know that it requires skill and permits. Our installation ensures quality, saves you time, and protects your warranty. We do sell our fence material so you can install the fence yourself.
- How difficult is it to install a fence?
Difficulty varies with terrain and fence type. Our experienced crews ensure proper installation for a fence that lasts. If you want to install your own fence, we will support you through the process with installation tips.
- I don't live in Joliet, do you provide your service in other cities?
Yes, we work throughout Chicagoland and Northwest Indiana. We have a full list of our locations. Feel free to contact us if you still have doubts about locations or any other questions.
